Anthony Armstrong DA drew
admiration at the gallery for his large scale pastels of French café
life. In the past year his attention has turned to the East Neuk of Fife and
thought-provoking aspects of local life that are passing into history.
'You will see from the accompanying slides that I have been much involved in
the subject matter of the East Neuk of Fife. This has taken a great deal of my
time and interest over the last year. I seem to choose subjects that represent
an aspect of Scottish life that is in the process of passing into history. You
may know that a few years ago I produced a series on the Berryfields of Blair.
That way of life, of gathering the harvest with the help of the poorer city
folk and their children, has now passed into oblivion.
The paintings that you see have been started sur le motif and then have
had much time and attention in the studio. I hope this process will enable
those who take the time to look a little longer, to enjoy the thrill that I had
when initially moved to commence my work. Effort on the part of both the artist
and the patron brings its own reward!'
