Taiko is the Japanese for 'drum', which is one of the
most basic and comforting of sounds from any indigenous culture around the
world, echoing the sound of our own heartbeat. Sometimes when I work, I listen
to classical music. I respond to this music on both emotional and spiritual
levels: I can savour what I hear without letting intellectual analysis get in
the way of my enjoyment. In the same way, I would hope the viewer could enjoy
my works without having to understand them. As with a piece of classical music
which becomes more familiar with each playing, I would hope that the viewer
gains a deeper level of enjoyment and understanding of my own works with time
spent simply looking.
