STEPHEN J CARRUTHERS
As the gallery has put the work of this emerging artist under the spotlight before, followers know to look for semi-abstract works based on landscape, together with bold still life studies.

The subtle soft-focus technique that Stephen Carruthers uses so successfully in his pastels continues through to his oils. Physical areas treated include the west of Scotland and the south of France, divergent enough for Stephen's original colour explorations - and the liberal application of paint!

Works range in size to suit a variety of spaces and different again, though still textural, are his strong and linear still lifes.

COLIN BROWN
Born in Dundee and raised in Kingussie, Colin Brown comes to Stenton Gallery via the wider world.

Awarded the prestigious Pollock-Krasner grant in 1996 and with subsequent support from the Scottish Arts Council, he is at this stage of his career perhaps better known internationally than at home.

His abstract paintings may appear more 'diffficult' than conventional representational works but longer examination is revealing. Simple shapes - certain almost childlike elements - begin to stand out, fragments of collage arouse curiosity and soon the multi-layered virtuosity of the composition begins to impose.

Far from depicting some existing thing, the true basis of his abstraction is to build, work up, 'grow' an image - densely patterned and only named at the moment of completion - which engages the viewer and generates a positive response.

Thus what is at first a complex and contemporary work stops making 'noise' and starts to 'speak'.
